29. How to Start a Side Hustle in Your 40s and Beyond

(When You Have No Idea What to Do)

There’s a moment that a lot of women hit in midlife that no one really prepares you for.

On the surface, everything looks fine.

Your career is steady. Your household is running. Your responsibilities feel manageable. But underneath that, there’s this quiet thought that keeps coming back:

I want something that’s mine.

Not something tied to your job. Not something built around someone else’s goals. Something that feels like you.

Almost immediately, that thought is followed by another one:

I have no idea what to do.

That’s the moment where so many women get stuck.

You’re Not Stuck. You’re in a Transition

Let’s clear this up first, because this matters.

Feeling stuck in this season has less to do with motivation and more to do with being in a transition.

Midlife is often the first time there’s space to think about yourself. Your kids are more independent. Your career is stable. You’re no longer in survival mode.

Instead of recognizing that as a shift, it often turns into self-doubt.

The thoughts start to sound like:

I’m behind
I should have figured this out already
I don’t even know where to start

But this isn’t failure. It’s a starting point.

Why Most Advice Makes This Worse

Here’s where things start to spiral.

There are more options available right now than ever before.

You could start a blog, launch a podcast, sell digital products, freelance, build a brand, or start a YouTube channel.

At first, that feels exciting. But very quickly, it becomes overwhelming.

So instead of choosing something, it turns into research, scrolling, and watching what everyone else is doing.

Instead of getting clarity, it leads to comparison and overthinking.

Then the fear starts to creep in.

What if I choose the wrong thing?
What if I waste my time?
What if I start and don’t follow through?

Instead of moving forward, everything stays exactly where it is.

The Simplest Way to Start (Without Overthinking It)

The goal isn’t to find the perfect idea.

It’s to find a place to begin.

The easiest way to do that is to simplify the process down to three things.

1. Start With What’s Already There

Instead of asking, “What should I do?” Shift the question.

What do I naturally spend time on?
What am I already good at?
What do people come to me for?

Most real ideas come from here.

Not from reinventing your life, but from paying attention to what’s already showing up.

There’s no need for a brand new identity. What matters is recognizing what’s already working.

2. Fit It Into Your Real Life

This is where many ideas fall apart.

It’s easy to plan around a version of life that doesn’t exist yet.

Instead, look at your actual life right now.

If you work full-time and have responsibilities, your time is limited.

So the better question becomes:

What can realistically fit into one to two hours a week?

If it doesn’t fit, it won’t last. In the beginning, consistency matters far more than intensity.

3. Use the “Tiny Test” Approach

This is where things start to click.

Instead of trying to decide if something is the right idea, focus on whether it’s worth trying for a short period of time.

Then take one small action.

Write one blog post.
Record one podcast episode.
Create one piece of content.
Share one idea.

The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is feedback.

Not just from other people, but from yourself.

Did you enjoy it?
Do you want to keep going?
Are you curious to improve it?

Clarity builds from action, not from overthinking.

The Real Goal Isn’t What You Think

It’s easy to believe the goal is choosing the right idea.

In reality, the goal is to stop sitting still.

Once there’s movement, things start to make sense.

You adjust. You refine. You figure it out as you go.

None of that happens while staying stuck in your head.

If You Feel Stuck Right Now, Start Here

Let’s keep this simple.

If you take nothing else from this, remember:

You’re in a transition
You don’t need the perfect idea
Start with what you already know and do
Make it fit your real life
Try something small this week

That’s it.

That’s how this starts.
