24. The February Slump Is Normal. Quitting Doesn’t Have to Be.

Did you have BIG resolutions in January?

They’re either still going… or quietly abandoned.

The New Year adrenaline is gone. The gyms aren’t packed anymore. The holidays are long over. Spring isn’t here yet. There’s this strange in-between stretch that nobody really talks about.

If you’re feeling it right now, you’re not alone.

January through March are my least favorite months. I live in Northern Ohio. It’s cold. The sky is gray. The light is limited. When nothing exciting is happening, it feels like time drags on forever.

I describe it as just prodding along.

The February Slump Is Real

Let’s be honest about what’s happening.

Light affects your energy.
Cold limits movement.
Socializing drops off after the holidays.

December is full of gatherings, parties, noise, and activity. Then January hits with adrenaline and big plans. But by mid-February? The energy dips. The adrenaline fades. Reality sets in.

There is nothing wrong with you.

February is not a motivational month.

It’s a maintenance month.

Maintenance is boring.

But maintenance is also necessary.

Stop Expecting Life to Feel Exciting All the Time

We’ve been sold this idea that if something is right, it should feel energizing. Growth should feel inspiring. Progress should feel obvious.

If you’re in midlife, you already know better.

Some seasons are repetitive.
Some seasons are quiet.
Some seasons don’t come with applause.

That doesn’t mean you’re off track. It means you’re doing real life.

Real work.
Real growth.
Real consistency.

February might be testing something deeper than motivation.

It might be testing your identity.

Are You Someone Who Starts… or Someone Who Stays?

Excitement is easy.

Consistency is powerful.

February exposes whether you’re building something because it’s thrilling or because it matters.

There are weeks when I’m building this blog and podcast, and nothing feels exciting. No big spike. No viral moment. No applause. Just steady editing, updating, planning, writing.

I’ve had steady growth. I’ve had nice months. But most of it? It’s quiet.

I had to ask myself:

Am I building this for excitement?
Or am I building this because it matters?

For me, it matters. I want to help women in this season build something that feels meaningful and aligned. And that requires consistency more than adrenaline.

That’s true for most things in midlife.

How to Move Through the February Slump Without Quitting

If you want to keep moving forward with something new, here are practical ways to stay steady.

1. Lower Your Expectations for the Season

This time of year isn’t usually exciting. Plan for lower energy instead of fighting it.

You don’t need to overhaul your life in February. You need to maintain.

2. Shrink the Goal, Don’t Scrap It

If your January goals feel like they’re falling apart, don’t automatically abandon them.

Ask yourself:

Is this still important to me?

If yes, reduce the intensity. Adjust the frequency. Make it sustainable.

Consistency beats bursts of motivation.

3. Track Effort, Not Emotion

Did you show up?

That counts.

If you know building something takes time, you won’t constantly look for instant gratification. That alone can protect your momentum.

4. Schedule the Spark

If you’re craving excitement, be intentional about it.

Change your playlist.
Update your routine.
Work from a different room.
Take your project to a coffee shop or the library.
Learn one small skill.

I recently switched up my music. I’ve listened to mostly 90s music for years. I got bored. I started playing 80s music instead. It’s cheesy. It’s upbeat. My six-year-old granddaughter loves it. It also lifted my mood more than I expected.

It doesn’t have to be dramatic. Just add one spark.

5. If You Quit, Decide Firmly

It is okay to quit something sometimes, but don’t drift.

Drifting leaves that inner voice whispering, “You didn’t finish.”

If you’re done, close the door. Make a firm decision. Move forward clean.

Drifting drains more energy than deciding.

Slow Doesn’t Mean Stuck

Not every season will be exciting.

Some seasons are proving grounds.

If you feel like you’re prodding along right now, that might be exactly where you’re supposed to be.

Maintenance seasons build meaningful lives.
