Graduation Party Decorations

Graduation season has a way of sneaking up on you. I started out fully convinced that we would have a simple, low-key graduation party. Nothing elaborate. Just good food, family, and a chance to celebrate. Then my sister started sending me Instagram reels filled with creative graduation party ideas, and suddenly my "simple" plan grew into something much bigger.

Even with all the extra details, I'm glad I took the time to plan ahead. Spreading purchases out over several weeks helped manage both the budget and the stress. What I thought would be an easy weekend project eventually turned into a full family preparation effort, but having a plan made all the difference. If you're hosting a graduation party, open house, or summer gathering this year, here are some practical tips that helped us stay organized and enjoy the celebration.

This graduation party checklist became my roadmap for keeping the planning organized and the stress under control.

Buy in Advance

Buy within a few days:

  • Get flowers from Trader Joe’s Friday AM!. (There will be a line of women there who plan. They will be willing to push you out of the way to get the flowers that they want!)

Buy (or pick up) 1-2 days prior:

  • Cake - but ordered it weeks in advance

  • Ceasar Salad

  • Cheese Tray

  • Veggie Tray

  • Fruit Tray

  • Cookie tray

  • Coleslaw

  • Macaroni salad

  • Ranch Dip

  • Boursin cheese

  • Other nice cheeses

  • Plenty of Ice

  • Sandwich Bar:

    • tomatoes

    • lettuce

    • meats

    • cheese

    • buns/bread

    • red onion

    • frozen chicken breasts

    • pickles

Things I have at Home:

  • mustard, mayo, BBQ sauce, pesto

  • lemons/limes

  • I have pepper jam and sweet onion preserves

  • crackers

  • mixed nuts

  • coolers

Do you have family staying at your house? Make sure you are ready for overnight guests:

Having this list was incredibly helpful throughout the planning process. Did I still end up with too much food? Absolutely. But I'd much rather send leftovers home with family than worry about running out. One thing I learned is that successful parties are about more than the menu. Think about your space, your school colors, where guests will gather, and whether you have activities or games to keep people entertained.

Now I'd love to hear from you. Are you planning a graduation party this year? What's the one thing you always forget to buy, or the best hosting tip you've learned along the way? Share your ideas in the comments. Your advice might help another family pull off a great celebration with a little less stress.
